Here’s how you can sign up for Stroud’s weekly parkrun – it’s free-of-charge and open to all

Stroud

Every Saturday at 9am

Venue: Stratford Park, Stroud

Stroud District Council has brought the global running phenomenon parkrun to Stroud. The weekly, 5km timed runs will take place very Saturday at 9am in Stroud’s Stratford Park.

All ages and abilities are welcome to the runs, including walkers, dogs on leads, babies in buggies (although only all-terrain buggies are suitable at Stratford Park) and children.

At the first Stroud Parkrun more than 130 participants tested the course, including experienced Parkrunner, Stroud District Council Chief Executive Kathy O’Leary. “I’m delighted that Stroud District Council has supported the opening of a parkrun for Stroud as part of our commitment to supporting healthy lifestyles,” she said. “It’s a challenging course, but great fun, and I hope it will encourage more people to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise.”

Since the movement started in 2004, more than six million people have taken part in parkruns across the world which are managed by a team of local volunteers.

The Stroud parkrun is free-of-charge to enter, but participants must register online and bring a printed barcode to the event.

Council leader Doina Cornell said: “Promoting the health and well being of our communities is one of our five key visions for the council and parkrun is a great way to get active. Stroud District Council owns and maintains Stratford Park for all and it makes a great venue for parkrun. I know some fellow councillors ran the first parkrun and having taken part in a couch to 5k course myself, I plan to soon, injury allowing.”

At the end of the event, runners and volunteers can enjoy breakfast in Stratford Park Leisure Centre’s café which is offering a 40% discount to those taking part.
