New Exhibition on Screen film

showing at the Drill Hall, Lower Church Street, Chepstow

Thursday June 6th, 7.30pm

Tickets £10 from Chepstow Museum 01291 625981

One of the world’s best loved artists comes under the spotlight in a new film being screened at Chepstow. Van Gogh and Japan, the subject of an exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and Tokyo last year, is the focus of the last Exhibition on Screen film this season which Chepstow Museum is showing at the Drill Hall on Thursday 6th June at 7.30pm. This extraordinary and moving film reveals the fascinating story of his little-known deep connection to Japanese art, its influence on him and his own art, and the role it has in understanding his most iconic works. Featuring Van Gogh’s personal letters and written accounts by friends and contemporaries, the film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh.

When Japan opened up to the West in about 1870, Paris became awash with all things Japanese in the form of decorative objects and colourful woodcut prints and this had a major impact on artists, above all, Van Gogh who fell under its spell. He eagerly collected and studied Japanese prints, the colourful and exotic images inspired him. He copied them to better understand them and in doing so developed a “Japanese eye” that gave his work a new and exciting direction.

When Vincent left Paris for the south of France, he discovered a beautiful landscape, powerful light and exotic people which spoke to his idealised vision of Japan – his Japanese dream. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan, as the film reveals, it is a country that had a profound influence on him.

Tickets are available in advance £10 from Chepstow Museum tel 01291 625981, and the event is a fundraiser for Monmouthshire Museums
