Dan Eustace Takes on 6 Challenges to Give Back to Sue Ryder in Memory of His Mum

Cheltenham

Dan Eustace, 33, from Cheltenham, is set to embark on an incredible fundraising journey in 2025 to raise money for Sue Ryder, a national charity that provides palliative and bereavement support. Marking the 10th anniversary of his mum’s passing, Dan felt compelled to give back to the organisation that supported his family during such a challenging time.

Dan's fundraising adventure will begin in April and spans a series of personal and meaningful events, including a 24-hour Mario Kart party and a cycle to St Andrew’s Stadium. These events are designed to honour his mum’s memory while raising vital funds for Sue Ryder’s Leckhampton Court Hospice, who provided invaluable care during his mum’s final days. "It’s been 10 years since our mum passed away, and it’s about time I did something to raise some money for Sue Ryder and give something back," Dan shared. "All of the staff were a great support for her towards the end of her life, and this is the least I can do to say thank you."

The first event, a 24-hour Mario Kart party, will bring friends together in a fun, nostalgic way, allowing Dan to reconnect with the memories of playing the video game with his mum. "Mario Kart is the easiest one to do, it needs the least amount of organisation, which is great because it leaves me more time to focus on the bigger challenges later," he explained. "We always used to play Mario Kart together, so it’s a perfect way to bring people together and keep my mum’s memory alive."

Next, Dan is preparing for the more physically demanding events, such as the 12-hour mini-golf tournament and a cycle to Birmingham City Stadium, where his mum has a memorial plaque. "That’s the smallest bike ride, only five or six hours," he said, knowing he’ll be pushing himself further with a longer ride "And then there's the longer bike ride to Exmouth Beach, where my family scattered my mum’s ashes.” Reflecting on his upcoming challenges, Dan says, “The challenge is daunting, but every mile will be a reminder of the holidays we spent together.”

As he gets ready for these events, Dan reflects on the support his family received from Sue Ryder. “I was speaking to my dad recently, and he said that at the time they were in contact with Sue Ryder, they were offered a place at Leckhampton Court Hospice, but my mum got very ill quickly and never made it in. They ended up coming out to us, checking everything was in place, which was reassuring for my dad. He’s disabled, so that peace of mind was superb. It was great knowing the support was there whenever we needed it."

Dan is determined to give back to Sue Ryder, understanding the difference their care can make. "The fact they were willing to come out to us and do all that for us is the reason I want to give back. It’s a great local cause, and they do incredible work for people not just here, but across the country." For Dan, the fundraising events are more than just a way to honour his mum, they’re also an opportunity to make a meaningful commitment. "I think she’d be very surprised," he said. "I had talked about doing this for a while (the fundraising), but I always said, ‘I’ll do it later.’ That’s very much my nature, always finding a reason to put things off. So, I think she’d be very surprised that I’ve finally committed to doing something like this, knuckling down and getting on with it. I think she’d be proud, but more surprised than anything."
Laura Jeffries, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: "Fundraising events like Dan’s play a vital role in helping us continue to provide expert and compassionate care to families navigating some of life’s most challenging times. We’re grateful for his dedication to giving back and raising funds to help others facing similar challenges. We look forward to seeing him complete his fundraising events and conquer each challenge he takes on."
