Local charity achieve goal of zero waste to landfill

Local medical charity Cobalt are one of the first few organisations to be awarded zero waste to landfill status through waste management service Printwaste’s accreditation scheme.

Ben Eager, Business Development Manager, Printwaste said: “We are delighted to have helped Cobalt reduce their waste and to be able to award them certification of zero waste to landfill.  We have over 30 years’ experience in waste management and are always keen to help our customers reduce or in this case eliminate landfill waste”.

The Charity set themselves the challenge of achieving zero waste to landfill after a consultation with staff to discuss how to do business more responsibly and to manage their impact on the environment.

The meeting highlighted waste and recycling as a key concern for staff.  Measures were quickly implemented to encourage sending less waste to landfill using clear informative signage by waste bins making segregation of waste much easier.

Jesse Smith, Estates Manager, Cobalt said “Waste recycling has increased by 75% compared to the previous month.  All of our waste is now either re-used, recycled or any which cannot be recycled is processed through Printwaste’s Waste-to-Energy scheme. Waste is transformed into a renewable energy source, mainly electricity and heat”.

The Charity now plan to look at other areas including energy use, heating and lighting to identify further potential reduction of the environmental impact of their operations and making further improvements to their environmental policy.
