Cheltenham Town Community Trust Celebrates World Book Day by Giving Free Books to Local Primary Scho

Chetenham

In celebration of World Book Day 2025, Cheltenham Town Community Trust partnered with the Premier League Primary Stars education programme to distribute free books to primary schools across Cheltenham. The books were generously donated by the World Book Day Charity in partnership with the National Literacy Trust and were gifted to local schools including The Ridge Academy and Bishop’s Cleeve Primary Academy (as pictured).

This initiative was part of a wider effort by the Premier League to encourage reading for pleasure and foster a love of learning. Since its launch in 2017, the Premier League Primary Stars programme had given away over 300,000 books, with a total value of £2.4 million. Available to every primary school in England and Wales, the programme uses football to help children stay active, learn and develop life skills. Over 70,000 teachers are already engaged with the programme, making use of more than 650 free downloadable resources across a range of subjects, including Maths, English, PE and PSHE.

Cheltenham Town Community Trust was one of 103 professional football clubs to benefit from the distribution of free books. As part of their Premier League Primary Stars session delivery, the Trust gave books to children across Cheltenham to inspire them to embrace reading alongside the excitement of football.

Ryan Godwin, Primary Stars Coordinator at Cheltenham Town Community Trust, said: “We were thrilled to be a part of this World Book Day initiative. Reading for pleasure is a key part of a child’s development and the opportunity to provide local children with books of their own was an exciting step in encouraging that passion. The pupils we work with through Premier League Primary Stars were always engaged and this gave them even more resources to enjoy.”

Ruth Shaw, Chief Executive of the Premier League Charitable Fund, said: “Since 2017, more than a quarter of a million children across England and Wales have received a free book thanks to Premier League Primary Stars and the National Literacy Trust. Reading for enjoyment builds confidence and promotes positive mental health in young people and we were proud to help children access these benefits through this wonderful programme.”
