Celebrated writer Pam Ayres MBE to publish a new book of collected works this October

Writer, broadcaster and entertainer, Pam Ayres MBE has spent a lifetime providing hilarious and profound insights into the delights and tribulations of everyday life. Now, Pam has gathered her career’s work of poetry, spanning six decades, into a beautifully illustrated collection, titled Doggedly Onward: A Life In Poems. This new book will be published by Ebury, on Thursday 3rd October 2024, which is (very aptly) National Poetry Day.

As a young woman in the seminal decade of 1960s Great Britain, Pam doggedly pursued a career as a performer and writer, stepping far outside of what was expected of her. In doing so she created a life for herself of which she could only have dreamed, travelling the world and bringing roars of laughter wherever she went. In 2004 she was appointed an MBE for services to literature and entertainment.

Pam is the author of several best-selling poetry collections, including The Works, With These Hands, Surgically Enhanced, You Made Me Late Again!, and Up In The Attic. She is one of only a few authors to have had their books included in the Sunday Times bestseller charts in almost every decade since the 1970s.

In Pam’s latest book, Doggedly Onward: A Life In Poems, she reflects on her writing and traces the course of her life from the young woman juggling various boyfriends, to the wife adrift amid the joy and terror of new motherhood, to her current position of astounded, adoring granny.

Included in Doggedly Onward: A Life In Poems are the cavalcade of much-loved dogs, her lifelong fascination with wildlife, the travel, mistakes, regrets, the heartbreak of leaving the family home, and the sober business of ageing. Meanwhile, she continues to explore new avenues, such as writing lyrics for musical theatre. This collection is not just a testament to Pam’s remarkable legacy, but is a celebration of the human spirit, capturing the tears, laughter, joy, and wisdom from a remarkable woman, whose work has provoked laughter and tears in people around the world.

Pam Ayres commented: “I have so enjoyed collating this collection, particularly revisiting some of my very early work, which I rarely use now in my stage performances, and I am delighted that so many of my poems have stood the test of time!”

The cover of Pam’s new book is a portrait by the artist Alex Chamberlin, and forms part of a series of portraits of prominent ex-service people (titled Veteran by a Veteran), including Pam who served in the RAF in 1965 for three years.

Pam will also embark on a new tour of theatres and literary festivals from early September 2024, sharing excerpts of her work and tales from her long career. For the full list of tour dates and how to book tickets, see https://pamayres.com/tour-dates/

Pam Ayres, Doggedly Onward: A Life In Poems will be published by Ebury on Thursday 3rd October 2024 and will be available both online and in store from books stores across the UK.
