REVIEW: The Ballroom Boys
Cheltenham Town Hall
The Ballroom Boys arrived at Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday Night promising an evening of Dance, Song and Banter and they delivered all in abundance.
Former Strictly Dancing professionals Ian Waite and Vincent Simone were joined on stage by Dancing with the stars Ireland professional Ksenia Zsikhotska and Crystal Main, who has previously toured with another ex strictly star Brendan Cole.
The evening began with a song from James Lomas who is best known for playing Billy Elliot in the West End. His performance of Top Hat got the show off to a swinging start. His smooth and versatile vocals entertained throughout the night, from upbeat numbers like Uptown Funk to the empowering anthem This is Me from The Greatest Showman.
Vincent and Ian, accompanied by their talented dance partners, performed to many movie love songs. Never Love Again from A Star is Born was a particularly emotionally number as was Vincent’s Rumba to the haunting With You from the musical Ghost.
Ian and Vincent entertained the audience with many anecdotal stories from their time at Strictly and even included a short Q&A. Their interactions on stage constantly mocking and teasing each other clearly showed the great friendship and a bond that has grown over the years working together.
Audience interaction was a great part of the night, including a fun game show that had everyone laughing and clapping. Members of the audience were picked to go on stage to dress up and perform as a mystery icon of music. Elton John, Madonna, Freddie Mercury and Tina Turner all strutted around the stage with the winner being chosen by the crowds enthusiasm, winning a signed Boys of Ballroom souvenir programme.
All the classic dances that Strictly fans have come to know and love like the Waltz, Quickstep, Flamenco and of course Vincent’s speciality the Argentine Tango were all performed in spectacular costumes and with such skill.
This show has stunning footwork, strong vocals and delightful music choices mixed in with plenty of hilarious and cheeky adult humour.
The Ballroom Boys will return next year in a brand new show!
