REVIEW - ALADDIN - Everyman Theatre
Cheltenham
Oh no you didn't... Oh yes we did!
The panto was back in town on 29th November and a week later it was in full swing for us at the early evening show, after a gaggle of giggling small school children left in the afternoon. Aladdin is of course based on Arabian Nights and very closely (but loosely being a panto) follows the story of Aladdin from his lowly background falling for the beauty and charm of Jasmine with many mishaps along the way.
Widow Twankey (Kevin Brewis) was wonderfully attired in some fantastically outrageous costumes, with equally cheesy and glittery backing dancers, and commanded the stage playing mum to Aladdin and Tweedy, with a host of innuendo between them! Youngsters, oldies and teens alike seemed to enjoy the traditions of a panto - we left with smiles on our faces and a Christmassy feel - silliness, songs old and new, jokes, Tweedy using his physical comedy to great effect getting himself in and out of a bouncy situation (that is all I will say to avoid any spoilers), crowd mentions, a short singalong before the glittery finale.
There were great vocal performances from Aladdin, Jasmine and the small but very mighty Spirit of the Ring (Jessica Martin). This year's Baddie Abanazar (Miles Western) is based on the King himself, Elvis, and was suitably evil with plenty of songs mentioned and sung, great outfits and "uh huhs" throughout... thank you very much.
With 2 shows a day and 3 on Saturdays, well into the new year you will not regret a trip to the theatre whether it's your first panto or a return - just keep your head down to avoid the flying carpet!
See the link for a pre or post Christmas bit of fun with family and friends - booking up to Sun 12th Jan 2025.
