REVIEW: Cluedo 2 at the Everyman Theatre

Cheltenham

Mark Bell, director of the hit comedy The Play That Goes Wrong, brings Cluedo 2 to the Everyman Theatre, a roaring new comedy based on the board game and film of the same name, Cluedo – or Clue, if you’re American.

Fans of the 1985 film starring Tim Curry will already be familiar with the characters, including Miss Scarlett and Mr Grey, but although this play is a sequel to the first Cluedo, you don’t have to have seen the first one to understand this one. This play features an entirely new plot and cast, set in the swinging 60’s with a whole new whodunnit to unravel.

Speaking of Americans, this play features the cowboy-themed Colonel Mustard, played by Casualty’s Jason Durr, and soldier-songwriter Reverend Green, played by Coronation Street’s Gabriel Paul, whose accents and misunderstandings of British culture often feature in the play’s humour. Cluedo 2 uses topical and local humour to great effect, as well as using the audience’s familiarity with the game and characters to spoof the murder mystery genre.

This play takes the well-known characters and throws them into an absurd plot with plenty of twists and turns. Audience members who enjoy a good 60’s reference will indulge in the groovy music and colourful costumes, while those who enjoy a good murder mystery will no doubt have endless fun picking up the clues scattered throughout the play.

The standout of the cast is Mrs White, a brilliant “everyman” (pardon the pun) to balance out the quirky cast, bringing a cheerful yet down-to-Earth banter to the group. Mrs White, played by Dawn Buckland, and the Butler, played by Jack Bennett, clearly have so much fun popping up now and then to deliver groan- and cheer-worthy puns. Each character has hidden depths, and it’s a lot of fun to see their facades unravelled throughout the play.

I would certainly recommend Cluedo 2 at the amazing Everyman Theatre, if you’re a fan of cheesy puns, whodunnits, wild characters, and swinging 60’s references. Tickets are on sale now until 20th June.
