REVIEW: The Girl on the Train at the Everyman Theatre
Cheltenham
The Girl on the Train is a thrilling, emotional rollercoaster that skillfully weaves mystery, drama, and heartache.
Giovanna Fletcher stars as Rachel Watson in this stage adaptation of the Paula Hawkins novel and she excelled at capturing the emotional depth of her character. Her portrayal of Rachel, a troubled alcoholic entangled in a missing persons investigation-was both raw and relatable, bringing the characters turmoil to life with impressive nuance.
Rachel, struggling with her past, becomes obsessed with a seemingly perfect couple she watches from the train every day. When the woman (Megan) mysteriously disappears, Rachel inserts herself into the investigation, uncovering dark secrets about Megan, her own past and those around her. As the truth unravels, she realizes she holds a crucial piece of the puzzle and must confront a shocking reality to bring the real culprit to justice.
The rest of the cast delivered strong performances, each adding depth and tension to the story, making the mystery even more gripping. The set design and lighting mirrored Rachels fractured state of mind beautifully, enhancing the plays intensity and immersing the audience in her chaotic world. The tension steadily builds, and the finale delivers a satisfying, though bittersweet, conclusion.
The Girl On The Train is showing at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham until Saturday 29th March 2025.
