REVIEW: Frightmare 2019

Gloucester

Despite the very wet weather, we had a great night at Frightmare, Over Farm, Gloucester.

Frightmare Gloucester Entrance

As the name suggests, Frightmare is scary. However, even for those of a nervous disposition will not find it completely terrifying. Although there were a few scare jumps most of them just made you laugh. It is reassuring to know that although the actors will make you jump they are not allowed to touch you. However, Frightmare is so much more than a scare jump event. The creativity in all seven of the attractions, and in general around the site, is fantastic. The costumes and make up are brilliant. The actors were superb at staying in character all evening. When they approach, you feel uneasy but never to the point of wanting to run away screaming. It was immersive and interactive (be prepared for audience participation) and all jolly good fun.

Frightmare Gloucester Spooky Clown

Personal favourites were Wonderland and the Haunted Hayride. Being a bit claustrophobic, I was worried about Wonderland as you have to push your way between two giant inflatables. However, it wasn’t too bad (a good tip is to hunker down behind someone else and let them push through first). Wear the 3D glasses for a totally psychedelic experienceI Haunted Hayride is brilliant and the only attraction that takes you away from the main site. You climb aboard a tractor-drawn trailer which races around Over Farm, which apparently played host to the filming of a notorious cult movie, The Harvest. This was surprisingly believable, to the point where we had to Google whether it was true or not (will leave it up to you to find out!). Half way round you disembark to walk round the barn (very creepy) before climbing back on for one last crazy blast on the trailer.

Frightmare Gloucester Shadow Man

Other entertainment included a superb magician doing card tricks in the food tent, stage acts including aerial silk performers and shadow shows and a photo booth. There is a merchandise stand, a good bar (try the toffee apple cider) and a wide range of delicious food.

Frightmare Gloucester Cider

Rain won’t ruin the evening. Other than the Vintage Fun Fair, all entertainment is under cover. However, bring layers and wear wellies and raincoats for walking between the car, the marquees and getting on the hayride trailer. The ground was muddy, even indoors.

Frightmare Gloucester Fun Fair Aerial View

If it’s within your budget, get the VIP queue jump ticket as queues can be up to 30 minutes long.

Overall, we had a fantastic evening. Can’t wait to do it all again next year!
