REVIEW: King Arthur: The Panto at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury

Tewkesbury

We were lucky enough to attend the first night of King Arthur: The Panto! at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury.

What a fun evening out it was! What more could you want from a festive offering than an original piece based on the legend of King Arthur? It is written by Roses board members Maurice Gran, writer of Birds of a Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart, and Nick Wilkes, first Writer in Residence at Malvern Theatres since George Bernard Shaw, who certainly know how to turn out a good panto.

REVIEW: King Arthur: The Panto at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury

The cast are excellent with a stand out performance from Ben Eagle as Ma Baker playing the classic pantomine dame with all the wigs, wit and costumes.

Writer Maurice Gran, told us that he is responsible for the double entendres in the script. There are certainly enough to keep the adults in the audience entertained and chuckling to themselves.

While Nick Wilkes is more responsible for writing the staging of the panto, so you'll see that some of the slapstick action is much more up his street!

REVIEW: King Arthur: The Panto at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury

The story features Arthur and Gwen, as well as Merlin and Morgana Le Fey, so you get some awkward love scenes as well as some dramatic special effects, along with the classic booing and "He's behind you!" Laughalot is Arthur's best friend and she brings in some fun magic and circus skills too.

So if you fancy a festive, family theatre visit that is rather different to some of the old favourites like Aladdin, then pop along to the Roses Theatre in December 2021 for some professional and quality entertainment for all ages.
