REVIEW: A Christmas Castle fit for a Princess
Winchcombe
Venue: Sudeley Castle
Imagine going to a castle full of lights just before Christmas, your children excited and full of awe, and it is on your doorstep.
Sudeley Castle, just outside of Winchcombe, puts on its yearly spectacle of light show, and we had the opportunity to experience it. Off the main road and driving toward the castle, the anticipation started growing. The tree-lined driveway was lit with multiple changing colours, and the dark fields beyond made them pop with light.
It was cold but dry, which added to the Christmasy feel, but grabbing a hot chocolate from the café took the edge off as we made our way around to the entrance. The kind and friendly staff, keen to make sure that the experience started at the gate, explained that there was a Sleeping Beauty theme this year and were great at keeping people in the spirit.
The show is all on foot and follows the pathways around the grounds. As we started through the gate, we saw the first glimmer of light and were immersed in the wonderful soft tunes playing from the hidden speakers, which followed us all the way around the event.
Starting with a beautiful display of light across the pond and into the grounds while standing in the remains of the castle, it set the scene for the entire walk, and the festive spirit set in. The next hour was full of wonderful light displays strung over trees, hedges, and paths that made every twist and turn in the path a wonderful surprise. The main gardens had thousands of bulbs light up every path, with the centrepiece of the whole event surrounded by warm, beautiful light arrays.
Halfway around, a few food trucks offered light and warm snacks and drinks to keep the energy high and bellies warm. The light show continued, with light projections on the walls of the castle and even a gorgeous display in the old chapel.
We spent a wonderful hour walking around. All stairs had accessible ramps, and care had been taken to ensure people could stop and take in the beauty while allowing the movement of crowds behind them. Since there are always limited tickets to these events, booking early and wrapping up warm are essential. Children will especially love the event, but there is enough adult wonder to entertain all who venture into the castle on these nights.
