Review: Tom Gates
In its twenty-seventh year, the Birmingham Stage Company has come up trumps with the premiere of Tom Gates.
Children and parents all over the world have been enjoying the delights of the ‘Tom Gates’ book series by author Liz Pichon since 2011.
The stage show attended by both my six and nine-year-old daughters didn’t disappoint.
Clever staging and a talented cast, lead by Matthew Chase playing Tom Gates, truly brought the characters and storyline to life.
The doodles and bright colour scheme in the familiar Tom Gates style flowed throughout the ever-changing technically enhanced set.
Young and older children were kept entertained with favourite songs from the original book series including ‘The Biscuit Song’ and ‘The School Dinner Blues’.
With many of the actors taking on two roles, this fast and engaging play delivered on ‘Epicness’ as my oldest daughter uniquely put it.
Whether you are an accomplished reader of the book series or new to the world of Tom Gates, you will thoroughly enjoy this jam-packed, fun-filled evening, highly recommended for a family night out.
