12 Ways To Make Your New Year Sparkle

Dates: Fri 01 Dec - Wed 31 Jan

12 ways to make your new year sparkle

Let Hawkwood suggest some delightful ways to enjoy 2018.

1.       Say Yes to Life

Life wants to support you, so find ways to say YES to what comes your way.

“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity to do something and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes. Then learn how to do it later.” — Richard Branson

Mac Macartney of Embercombe encourages us to feel good in our skin and say yes to our purpose through nature and community in a new year retreat 19-21 January: Coming Home

2.       Foster peace compassion and understanding

Whether it’s a family matter or something at work, ongoing conflict or past difficulties can drain energy from our everyday life and affect our well being. Expert trainer Ana Rhodes Castro (formerly of the Findhorn Foundation) brings Beyond Conflict 5-8 March . The men’s movement is growing in southwest UK with JourneyMan UK and the ManKind Project.  Jay Ramsay and Nick Clements bring Crossing the Bridge: A weekend for men 6-9 April.

3.       Practice gratitude

Get a sense of the privilege of being alive with wise-thinker Mac Macartney of Embercome

4.       Think out of the box and speak your truth

Communicating our wish to save the planet, bring peace or change society can take some doing. Media expert Caroline Aistrop has some great strategies for communicating your green message on 22 March.

And peace pioneer Scilla Elworthy takes on big business when campaigning for peac at top levels of government and the military. She brings a public talk on her latest book The Business Plan for Peace on 9 April. Check out the Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking for more inspiring talks and events with change makers, entrepreneurs and philosophers.

5.       Be Selfish

Surprisingly, looking after ourselves can actually be a gift to other people.

“… as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -- Marianne Williamson, spiritual teacher and author.

Theresa Sansome’s workshop Selfish! The art of self care as an act of generosity  is on Saturday 17 February.

6.       Be Kind to your Body and Soul

Our wellbeing offer  includes New Year Retreat, Restorative YogaSelf-Remembrance through Sound with The Naked Voice, Kindfulness Day and Living in the Light Tai Chi with Jason Chan.

7.       Eat well

Come for an affordable day course on Nutrition or Superfoods - Fermentation

8.       Find your passion and your purpose

International poet, translator and initiator of Sacred Activism Andrew Harvey makes a rare visit to UK 20-22 April for a weekend retreat Rumi and the Way of Passion and a public talk on Friday 20 April.  Immerse yourself in the heart-opening wisdom and poetry of the ancient Persian sage, Jalaluddin  Rumi and awaken your inner activist.

Examples of people with purpose can spur us on –especially in the centenary year of Women’s Suffrage 1918. Penni Blythe’s fascinating day on 14 April  Women of Wit, Wisdom and Wonder will provide grist for your mill! A leisurely weekend 3-5 August brings Michelle Preston's Simply Women on Purpose Summer retreat.

9.       Focus -  focus -  focus

Take that list of goals you’ve set for the new year and pick one thing, then highlight it. Maybe it’s lose weight, de-clutter or get fit. And then — (drum roll)_ — do it. That’s it. Easily distracted? Come to our February RSA Watch (film and discussion evening) 6 February How to flourish in an age of distraction

10.   Re-wild!  Re-wilding the Soul: Writing from the Earth's Landscapes with Mary Reynolds Thompson and Bruce Thompson from California is a way into your wild self, as well as simply being  with huge trees in the woodlands, gardens and fields in and around Hawkwood and courses in nature and sustainability.

11.   Be Creative and make things

12.    Have fun!

Hawkwood’s May Day Festival

is set to be the best yet as the college celebrates its 70th Anniversary. The annual event is a great day out for families and a place to meet old and new friends in beautiful surroundings. What better way to enjoy the late Spring Bank Holiday Monday 7 May?
