‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’ and ‘A Window into The Wilson’

Cheltenham

11th November - 17th December 2017

The Wilson invites visitors to participate in two new exhibitions
as it moves into an exciting development stage.

The Wilson, Cheltenham’s premier art gallery and museum, announces the launch of two unconventional exhibitions this November, inviting the public to participate in the venue’s next phase.

The new exhibitions, titled ‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’ and ‘A Window into The Wilson’, invite visitors to engage with and experience collections in a new way. The exciting behind-the-scenes look into the museum aims to encourage visitor discussion and interaction with the collections and their intriguing stories.

Currently, the team at the Wilson are working hard to pull these exciting new exhibitions together by building brand new display spaces, constructing plinths and moving objects that have been hidden away for years, bringing them to light.

‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’ is a living exhibition and an opportunity for the general public to explore and feed into the future of the museum at an exciting time. The exhibition comprises a giant temporary wooden structure created by Spike Island in Bristol, which will fill part of the gallery and provide a space for visitors to contemplate an important question: The Wilson – what are the possibilities?
The space will also be occupied by community groups and artists for ‘takeover days’. These include dance performances, scratch nights, and cardboard-land space making.  Creative Producer Lizzy Maries says: “We’ve created a new space for a new tone. Over 5 weeks we want to fill our gallery with voices – from recurring visitors to first-time explorers. This exhibition is about seeing our collection and stories from different angles – and writing new ones with new groups. It’s about exploring where we could go together. Everyone is welcome to experience this living exhibition in their own way, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”
Alongside this, key objects selected by The Wilson curators will be on display to reveal some of the fascinating stories behind the collections. This incredible selection includes watercolours by E.A. Wilson from the Terra Nova Journey in the early twentieth century and the infamous Sherborne Street Chimney Sweep.
The second exhibition, ‘A Window into The Wilson’, invites visitors to discover more about The Wilson and its collections. By allowing visitors to take a glimpse into a purpose-built visible store, they can explore unexpected objects that would be otherwise hidden from view. There will be the opportunity to discover more about the processes of caring for the collection of objects and art through open store sessions with the curatorial team. The exhibition will evolve throughout its life, with the showing of a new ‘star object’ and a corresponding talk from its curator. The first of these talks is ‘Tea with The Tiger’ in November.

Both exhibitions will open at The Wilson on 11 November 2017, with ‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’ running until 17 December 2017, and ‘A Window into The Wilson’ until 22 July 2018. A number of engaging paying events will be running throughout the campaigns, and attendance to the exhibitions themselves will be free of charge with a pay-what-you-want option.
