EXHIBITION: Windows In Life - Anni Golemienko

Dates: 02 - 22/11/2017

"I was born in Gloucester to an English mother and Polish Father.

My father fought with the British forces in WW2 and at the end of the war settled in England. He managed to survive the utmost brutality through Europe and the north African Desserts helping to bring down the Nazi's in Monte Casino. I lost him at the age of 7yrs old to suicide.

My Mother was left to fend for herself at the age of 17 yrs, to live as a lodger in my father's house. They became close, and married a year later. Her father emigrated to Australia around 1954.  After my father died, my mother was left to cope but couldn't, only to be left destitute and alone. (There was no safety net in those days). Myself and my siblings were taken into care and that became my struggle for survival.

Throughout my time in the care system, I have had six different surnames, none of them truly me. My life experiences of being damaged physically and emotionally have enabled me to recreate myself to be whatever I want to be. I am my art and my art is me. It is sacred and something that cannot be touched or broken.

Life can still be very dark at times, but my art gives me just that little bit more strength. It is my pathway to survival.

I now live in Stroud, the heart of the Cotswolds, a beautiful and inspiring location, with its canals, a river, woods and commons.

Here, I enjoy creating an eclectic and diverse range of work. I work with a never ending palette of mixed media, to create oil and water paintings, collage, sculptures and installations. I don't believe in limiting myself."
