Mindfulness 8-week Course
11th October - 29th November 2017, 7-8.30pm. £175
Please note, the first and last sessions start at 6.45pm.
‘Mindfulness’ refers to a capacity we all have to bring present-moment awareness to our everyday experience with the attitudes of curiosity, warmth and kindness, and to a ‘tool-box’ of practices that can help us to train this capacity.
We often think that finding peace and happiness depends on something changing on the outside. “If only my job/my relationship/my life/the world were different…..” Mindfulness shows us the possibility of finding an inner resource of calm in the midst of a frantic world. The simple yet powerful practices can be incorporated into daily life to help break the cycle of unhappiness, stress, anxiety, constant busy-ness and mental exhaustion. As a result, we may experience greater physical and mental wellbeing and discover a sense of living our lives more fully.
This course is based on the best-selling book Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World by Professor Mark Williams (Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford and co-developer of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) and journalist Danny Penman. It consists of 8 weekly session of 1.5 hours, plus guided practices at home for about 15 minutes each day. The practices range from bringing awareness to the body both when still and when moving (gentle stretches and walking); settling our attention on the breath; relating differently to thoughts and worries; appreciating more fully what is already positive in our lives, and bringing greater kindness to ourselves and our experience.
“Peace can’t be achieved in the outside unless we have peace on the inside.” (Goldie Hawn)
This is a tried and tested course which is being taught in The Houses of Parliament to MPs from all political parties, in universities, workplaces, schools as well as to the general public.
Alison Yiangou is a fully qualified mindfulness teacher and an Associate of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, where she teaches courses for the general public. She also teaches mindfulness courses locally and in schools. Feel free to contact her for more information: firstname.lastname@example.org
Responses from attendees of the last course held at Whole Foods Market, Cheltenham:
'It was an absolute joy to be a student on this course. I valued all the different aspects of the course, and liked the progressive structure, building on previous week's practice and including time for reflection. I feel that it has been exactly what I needed at this point, from both a personal and a professional point of view.'
'This course has been life-changing for me. During the course, I found I could practice easily, the book and your handouts were enormously helpful and I felt supported and beautiful guided throughout the eight weeks. As far as the structure of the course is concerned, I found this to be extremely well thought through. As we progressed, we were given a variety of different forms of mediation to put into our ‘tool box’ and the length of unguided spaces within these meditations was increased, allowing us to grow wings'
'I have found the course very important and powerful. I have recognised so many of the scenarios that we have explored in my own life and now have the tools to enable me to recognise and deal with my thoughts and feelings that arise. I found all aspects of the course very valuable, but in particular the attitude of kindness and gratitude, which has remained with me, and the awareness of the nurturing and depleting activities.'
