The work of illustrator and printmaker Andy Lovell is characterised by making drawings and paintings from life which are then revisited through the medium of print.
The original drawings are not an end in themselves but rather aim to catch the essence of a place in a form that can be translated to print back in the studio.
His sharp graphic eye then brings shape and texture to the resultant printmaking which is instantly recognisable and always evocative. He is drawn to the immediacy that the screen-print and monotype processes which results in a gestural and often graphic interpretation of these initial sketches and paintings done on location that capture a real sense of mood and place.
The result is a kind of abstraction; a reduction in the elements of the image, which makes us totally engage with his shifting vision. His studio practice embraces both the screenprint and monotype processes, each of which imposes and encourages a bold interpretation of these initial paintings but with each offering very different qualities to the final image. Through its graphic nature and the layering of colour, screenprinting lends a rich simplicity to the prints which clarifies and enhances the scene. The reverse is true of the monotype process which offers up sensual and nuanced tonal prints.
