Anna is a printmaker, illustrator and image-maker. She began her printmaking career whilst studying at Bristol and then graphic communication at Central Saint Martins. She now works out of her studio in Bristol. Anna Marrow creates surprising, often nostalgic and sometimes alarming images by combining mundane objects and environments with exotic creatures and characters. She likes to pinpoint a specific moment in time, regularly depicting objects from her childhood – 70’s televisions, radios and cars feature heavily in her work, as do urban and suburban landscapes along with the odd Mr Whippy ice cream van!
Anna has a particular fondness for “twiddly” Victorian and contemporary brutalist architecture; a combination of the two seems to echo most of the places she has lived in - Liverpool, London and Bristol. The artist’s detailed drawings are vividly coloured, sometimes with astonishing combinations of shades and hues. Her prints are characterized by peculiar juxtapositions of themes and imagery.
Birds seem to be a regular feature throughout her work. For Anna her birds represent freedom, ambition and imagination. For her show in Prema’s upstairs gallery, Anna gives us a glimpse into her colourful, nostalgic world as we enjoy the breadth and diversity of her creative output and beautiful prints.
