Sculptor Matt Pilston creates 3D work which tells its own story and has its own sense of life and animation. Making things seems to have held a fascination for Matt since childhood – the smells of plasticine, balsa glue and hot solder and the riotous aesthetics of old cornflakes packets, poster paint and Sellotape.
His choice of materials is now perhaps a little more sophisticated; incorporating plasticine, plaster, resin, pigments and reclaimed wood. In the studio, Matt experiments with the almost alchemic and transformative processes of moulding and casting.
Following a fine arts degree from Middlesex Polytechnic, Matt went on to a variety of careers including working with international animation giants Aardman, creating medical training models and a spell working for a company called “Limbs and Things” as well as model-making for films.
Matt now dedicates his time and energies in creating sculpture, lecturing and working to support adults with additional learning needs.
It may (or may not) surprise you to learn that Matt is the brother of fellow-exhibitor Jim Pilston!
