Artist Sarah Brooker initially trained in fine art in the 1980s at Portsmouth Polytechnic and then undertook postgraduate studies in textiles at Goldsmiths College, London. In the earlier part of her creative career, Sarah experimented with various media including sculpture and metal before focussing her career on the then fairly unknown medium of wet-felting. Her ability to draw is reflected in the intricacy of her felted pieces where she seems to be able to literally “paint” with wool.
The wet-felting process itself, which involves hot water, soap and friction is a magical process which bonds the fibres permanently. Sarah is drawn to using natural fibres such as merino fleeces, flax and silk to create beautiful colourful images that are often embellished with stitch for a textured 3D effect. These framed and unframed hangings range in subject matter from the domestic to the natural world. Sarah has recently created several commissions here and abroad as well as showing prolifically in the UK over the past 15 years.
