Owen Davey - Exhibition
13 June - 4 August 2018
Owen Davey is an award-winning illustrator who lives and works in Leicester. Inspired by mid-century design, he uses a palette of warm, muted colours to create illustration and environments that are simultaneously contemporary and nostalgic. He has worked with clients from across the globe and is behind the Flying Eye best-sellers Mad About Monkeys and Smart About Sharks.
He studied illustration at Falmouth University and has had his work published in every continent except Antarctica! He also has an impressive list of clients ranging from National Geographic to the New York Times, Jamie Oliver to Unilever, Transport for London to LEGO.
All of Owen’s pieces start with pencilled thumbnail illustrations. He then scans and works directly on top using Photoshop. Once he is happy with the shapes, he adds textures and “imperfections”. The finished pieces use unifying palettes, repetitive shapes and patterns. But no matter how detailed, all the layers seem to sit on one plane. Distant hilltops are just as close as foreground homes. Crowds of people stand together without a consideration for personal space.
On the rare occasion he’s not beavering away in his studio, Owen can be found cooking and baking, practising yoga or playing nerdy computer games. He admits to a fondness for books intended for children & teenagers and watching a variety of films and awesome HBO TV.
