Cheltenham Choral Society are delighted to bring to you three magnificent works under our new conductor Alex Thacker at our new regular venue, Christchurch.

We will be performing Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s ‘Coronation’ Mass and Cherubini’s Requiem.

The Gloria was composed by Vivaldi in 1715. It is a joyful arrangement of the traditional Hymn of Praise from the Roman Catholic Mass.

Mozart wrote his ‘Coronation’ Mass at the age of 23 in 1779. It was thought to have acquired its name because it was performed for the coronations of Leopold II in Prague and Francis I of Austria. It is one of the most popular of his masses, a celebratory work, jubilant in tone.

Cherubini excelled in producing sacred music and it is his Requiem in C minor for which he is most remembered. The work is for a four part choir with no soloists and is a highly dramatic piece of writing. It was greatly admired when it was first performed in 1816. Beethoven so admired it that it was played at his funeral in 1827 and Schuman said the work was without equal in the world.
