Collage artist Miranda Millward is fascinated by serendipity, memory, nostalgia, the passing of time and incomplete narratives. Her work plays on memories real and imagined and her practice draws visually upon times and places where our common memories overlap. The domestic, ‘feminine pastimes’, childhood memories or childish pursuits are often visual reference points.
Vintage ephemera, old postcards, children’s books, paper sewing patterns, found photographs, volumes of encyclopedia, lurid-coloured cookbooks, magazines and discarded papers are endlessly sought out, cut up, layered, juxtaposed and transformed to create collaged works that play on our collective and fragmented memories … both visual and tactile. Miranda’s work is often playful and slightly tongue in cheek but sometimes there is also a sense of menace or of a story with an ambiguous ending…
The accessibility of collage as a medium has huge appeal. Miranda uses basic equipment – scissors, scalpel and glue stick alongside a variety of low-fi techniques such as cutting, tearing and pasting sometimes incorporating image transfer techniques using packing tape, solvents and tracing paper. Look out for Miranda’s brilliant adult workshop in mid-July.
