Cheltenham Heritage Open Days

6th - 9th & 13th - 16th September 2018

Welcome to Cheltenham Heritage Open Days 2018

Cheltenham Heritage Open Days

Click the more details below for the full programme of events.

Commemorating the end of WW1, celebrating the centenary of women’s suffrage and finding hidden stories within Cheltenham buildings – we are packing all this into 2018’s Heritage Open Days

We are joining the Cheltenham Remembers project by marking the signing of the Armistice in 1918 with walks, talks and displays to show Cheltenham’s role in the Great War.Votes for women were first achieved one hundred years ago so we are recognising Extraordinary Women who made that happen, telling their stories and of other women who have contributed to the town.

We also again have access to many of the town’s intriguing hidden and secret places where access is not normally given.

Whilst we are on ‘secrets’, for the first time we are promoting a partner event Secrets, Lies and Spies that ties in with Cheltenham’s code-breaking history (See back cover for details).

On top of all this, there are more buildings to discover. Notable buildings opening for the first time are the fabulous historic Leckhampton Court where Sue Ryder carry out their valuable work and the recently refurbished Regency period Clarence Gardens (John Dower House). Also Cheltenham Bowling Club Suffolk Square which is celebrating its centenary are opening to share their history, offer a rarely seen panorama of the town’s finest Regency square and even the chance to have a bowl!

We have another first, where three respected local writers, who have all recently published books on the 2018 themes, are coming together to discuss their work in our Meet the Author event. Fittingly, this is being held in one of the actual WW1Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) hospitals where Cheltenham folk nursed soldiers wounded at the front, so be sure to come along and join us. (See page 9 for details).

Look out for the symbols below against entries in this brochure that identify where they are tied to one of the particular themes for 2018.
