REVIEW: Ghost Stories at the Everyman Theatre

Journey into the Supernatural with a long running West End hit!

Ghost Stories is a collection of spine-chilling tales that are meticulously crafted by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman. The production captures the feel of traditional ghost tales and elevates them into modern day with a good sprinkling of thrilling contemporary twists and an atmosphere that is nostalgic and refreshing.

 

Following the sceptical Professor Goodman as he embarks on a mission to debunk the paranormal, the production revolves around three hauntingly gripping narratives, each exploring the human response to the supernatural. In his quest, Prof Goodman investigates the hauntings of a night watchman, a teenage boy, and a businessman.

In turn, they each tell their eerie tales in a format that showcases their vastly different characters in meticulous detail. They explore unresolved trauma and buried secrets that haunt them both physically and metaphorically, delving into the dark recesses of the mind. The storytelling is seamless, effortlessly weaving elements of humour and quirkiness with sorrow and tension. Dyson and Nyman’s skilfully-executed pacing results in a methodical and suspenseful buildup to each supernatural revelation, keeping the audience on tenterhooks from the first line to the last.

 

For me, other than the characterisation, I was extremely impressed with the ever-evolving set, which was vivid, eerie and downright clever in its design and use. The dynamic use of space added to the pace of the show and helped to draw on my intrigue as events unfurled. I found myself looking into the shadows, which took on a life of their own, and searching for the meaning in the various sounds that seemed to come from all directions. These acts in themselves almost played a part in the production, adding to the cohesive and immersive experience.

This collaboration between Dyson and Nyman is a triumph, with their combined expertise being evident in the meticulous construction of each tale. Their distinct voices work together to offer a consistent delivery of a diverse array of horrors, with keen timing and dramatic tension that translates effectively on stage.

I cannot give too much away about Ghost Stories, as it is expected that I keep the secrets of the goings on that happened tonight. Other than what I have said, all I can say is that you won’t be disappointed in this production. It is simply a remarkable addition to the genre of horror, honouring the traditions of it, while pushing boundaries. The masterful storytelling, compelling characters and evocative atmosphere pulls you into a world and then releases you again from a place that is both enthralling and unforgettable. And as a bonus, if you choose to secure a programme you will find a world more information to continue your journey into the supernatural.
