Aaron Downes becomes new assistant manager

We are delighted to announce that former Club captain Aaron Downes has been named as our new first team assistant manager.

Downes joins new manager Michael Flynn’s backroom team after he left his position as interim manager at Torquay United last month.

The 39-year-old returns to the Robins following the departure of Ian Baraclough, after his short-term contract with the Club expired.

Born in Australia, Downes made a name for himself in English football as a player during his eight-year spell with newly promoted Chesterfield before moving south to Torquay.

He then arrived in Gloucestershire in the Summer of 2015 as then manager Gary Johnson’s first signing as the side went on to win the National League title.

Downes would eventually retire from playing and go on to take up the Head of Academy Coaching role at the Club as well as working as a member of first-team staff.

Downes then returned to Plainmoor, joining up with Johnson once again to become his assistant at Torquay where he spent five-and-a-half years.

Everyone at the Club is delighted to welcome Aaron back to Cheltenham and look forward to seeing him in the home dugout again.

Welcome back, Aaron!
