Saddle up for charity cycle event

 Brian Smith from Tewkesbury will be amongst the cyclists taking part in Ride for Ryder 2025 sponsored by Cape Homes, who will be raising money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham. 

 

Taking place on Sunday 6 July this popular event is now in its 37th year and Brian has been lining up on the start line most years since 2012, when his wife Annie was receiving care from Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. He explains what first drew him to the event: “Cycling has always been part of my life, when Annie was ill it was my way of coping. I’d come back from a ride more balanced. Exercise is hugely important for my wellbeing, Annie always said I’d go out on a bike ride and come back a different person!”

Brian’s involvement with the event has grown over the years, since 2016 he has also helped to plan the cycling routes. Covering the beautiful Cotswold countryside there are five different distances on offer from 40km to 160km, providing opportunities for people with a whole range of fitness levels and cycling abilities to get involved. There is a fantastic atmosphere on the day and plenty of support for participants, as Brian shared: “What I love about the event is the real buzz of being in such a large group. When I am out on the ride I cross paths with cyclists of all different abilities. Sometimes you see someone who needs a bit of encouragement, so I slow down and give them some coaching and that makes all the difference!”

The dedication that Brian has shown to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice is remarkable, he explained why this ongoing relationship is so important to him: “Keeping involved with the hospice gives me a sense of attachment. I’ve wanted to give back, not just because of the care they gave Annie, which was awesome from day one, but also the support they have given me. I still get strength from my association with the hospice - it gives to me, and I give back.”

Reflecting on what Annie would have made of his involvement and what he is most looking forward to at this year’s challenge Brian shared: “She’d have been delighted, she would probably have told me I’m completely mad but she would definitely have been delighted. I can’t wait to see everyone having fun again at this year’s event!”

We are so grateful to Brian for his incredible ongoing support over the years, both as an event volunteer and as a participant in the challenge raising thousands of pounds. Thanks to incredible supporters like him we are able to raise funds that ensure we can continue to provide care to people when they need it most.”

Ride for Ryder 2025 takes place on Sunday 6 July and starts and ends at Dean Close School in Cheltenham. There are five distances to choose from:
40km, 60km, 90km, 130km and 160km.
