Sue Ryder encourages people to sign up to Gloucester's second half marathon and 10k event

National healthcare charity Sue Ryder is urging people in Gloucestershire to hit the ground running in 2025 and sign up for the Gloucester Half Marathon and 10k to help raise vital funds.

The event organised by Run Through invites participants to choose from one of the two routes running through the city on 30 March 2025 to support Sue Ryder, with volunteers from the charity ready to celebrate runners at the event village offering some well-deserved treats and a picture with their finisher's medal.

As the event's official charity partner, Gloucester Half Marathon and 10k is a huge fundraiser for Sue Ryder with last year’s inaugural event raising an incredible £40,000 for the charity. Funds raised by runners taking on the 2025 challenge will help the palliative care and bereavement support charity, which runs Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice near Cheltenham, continue to be there when it matters.

Championing the call for participants is Issy Farrel, a 26-year-old teacher from Bishops Cleeve who herself is getting ready to take on the running challenge for the second time. Issy was inspired to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder after the team at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice cared for members of her family.

Issy explained: “My family has been touched by cancer many times over the years, and I’ll be running in memory of my grandparents, my Auntie Christine and my auntie’s partner Owen.

"Having seen first-hand the support that Sue Ryder staff showed members of my family when they needed it, I know that their expert care and compassion make a profound impact on the lives of patients and their family members.

“Nothing is too big for them to do for patients. My auntie was even able to bring their dog in to see her partner, Owen during his care at Sue Ryder, which brought him comfort. It was a lovely act of kindness during an incredibly tough time for him and his family.

"Family members were able to take drinks and snacks into the hospice to watch Wales play rugby with Owen. The things most people might take for granted will make a world of difference to people when they need it most. I hope that the reasons why I will run in the Gloucester Half Marathon might motivate other people to participate in either distance.”

Issy says that her passion for running transformed her life and just one month after taking on her second half marathon in Gloucester this March, she will also be lacing up her trainers for her first TCS London Marathon.

Issy said: “The mental and physical benefits of running are extraordinary. I can’t wait to cross that finish line at the Gloucester Half Marathon! It’ll also be great training for the TCS London Marathon in April which I will also be running as part of Team Sue Ryder.

“If you’ve ever thought about running for a cause, now is the time! Not only do you get to challenge yourself, but you’ll also be part of a community dedicated to making a real difference.”
