Company directors take on Severn running challenge for charity

Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire’s business telecoms and IT firm, SCG South West, along with SCG Wales, have teamed up to run the River Severn from source to mouth in just seven days, aiming to raise £7,000 for local cancer charity Hope for Tomorrow.

Matt Wring, Chief Technical Officer at SCG and John Matthews, Managing Director of SCG Wales, started their ‘7-7-7 Challenge’ at the river’s source on 1 June, aiming to run 220 miles over the course of one week. The aptly named fundraiser aims to raise £7,000 in 7 days by the pair running the length of the River Severn.

Stonehouse-based charity Hope for Tomorrow helps the NHS bring vital cancer treatment closer to patients with their mobile cancer care units across the region as well as the rest of the UK. It relies solely on donations to build and maintain the units in order to help as many cancer patients as possible. Each specialist mobile cancer care unit costs approximately £300,000 to build and costs £212 a day to keep on the road.

The charity has partnered with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver its services to patients across Cinderford, Stroud and Cirencester, delivering 1,645 treatments last year.

Claire Maddox, Managing Director, SCG South West said: “Matt and John are making great progress and are on target to complete their mammoth challenge this Saturday 8 June. They’re running more than a marathon, every day for a week without a break, which is incredible. It’s been quite eventful by all accounts – they’ve been chased by swans and cows, and the changing weather and hard going terrain have added their own challenges. It’s all in the name of a fantastic cause, so please dig deep and let’s get Matt and John over the finish line with more donations to help reach their target – they’re still some £2,000 off so every penny really does count.

“They have trained so hard and dedicated so much of their spare time to this for them to be in the best possible shape - they’ve got this!”
