Freeman Homes toasts its 112th zero carbon living home

Gloucestershire

Local housing developer Freeman Homes is celebrating a landmark achievement, heralding 112 zero carbon living homes across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. With the developments completing in March 2025 and all the properties EPC A-Rated, the collection supports individuals to lead zero carbon living lives.

Established in 1999, the award-winning developer has now doubled its growth with plans to build 100 homes per year in its mission to prioritise use of renewable energy technologies. They are starting construction in four new locations across the two counties of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire in the coming months.

The award-winning developer offers numerous specified energy efficient features in its developments as standard, including NIBE air source heat pumps, EV charging points and ready to use, roof-integrated Viridian PV solar panels with batteries, as well as using pioneering timber frame construction which provides thermal efficiency, reduced maintenance and lower embodied carbon, plus high-performance materials which limit carbon production. These features offer homebuyers the option to lead zero-carbon or low-carbon lives, where the infrastructure of their property is not contributing to their carbon footprint.

Freeman’s developments also prioritise the preservation and development of sustainability in external spaces, by incorporating biodiversity planting to support local wildlife, leaving a high percentage of the site fallow, and incorporating infrastructure such as bee bricks and bird boxes into the fabric of the house. There are also various outdoor landscaping options from rainwater butts and compost bins to recycling facilities.

Hayley Coombs, Sales and Operations Director at Freeman Homes, said: “We’re extremely proud of achieving this milestone, which reflects the growing demand for sustainable new builds. Over the past few years, we've made a conscious effort to transform our approach to building houses. Being an independent housebuilder gives us the freedom to not just stay up to date with the newest renewable technologies but go above and beyond the required regulations to offer a new template for sustainable construction and eco living; one that makes it possible for people to live with zero energy consumption beyond what they generate themselves.”

Re-investment of profits is also ploughed back into communities where Freeman Homes’ projects are located, which to date have seen over £1m in community contributions to support education, healthcare, transport and sport & recreation.

Coombs continued: “As both a ground-breaking developer and community-focused business, we’re not just about designing our homes to improve sustainability but to also improve the lives of local residents.

In a regional first, the next phase of the Newnham-on-Severn development will also benefit from a climate positive building, built to high specification, to trial as a pilot property in which Freeman Homes will source, install and test the effectiveness of cutting-edge, sustainable building practices. The ambition will be to make the property not just net zero, but a regenerative building, contributing more to the environment than it costs in resources."

Hayley added: “We’ve pinpointed four of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals that are particularly relevant to us, and we’re striving to make a difference through our sustainability framework. It’s clear with the challenge we face in reaching net zero that meaningful action must be taken to achieve sustainability with tangible results. That’s why Freeman Homes acknowledge the importance in applying robust, innovative strategies to encourage the widespread use of renewable technologies in the construction sector.”
