Ex-pupil of William Romney School finalist in rural oscars

Tetbury

We are delighted to announce that Artisan Jack of Tetbury has been shortlisted to win a Countryside Alliance Award in the Southwest Butcher category. The Awards are the Countryside Alliance’s annual celebration of British food & farming, enterprise and heritage through our small hard-working businesses.

Operating from a customised unit on Trull Farm just outside Tetbury, Artisan Jack was established in 2019 by Jack Wallace, an ex-pupil of Sir William Romney School. Jack is a traditionally trained butcher & curer with more than 10 years’ experience. As a nose-to-tail butcher everything is prepared and cut-to-order by Jack and his team. Animal welfare and supporting local trade are very important to him, which is why all produce is homemade or locally sourced, 100% free range & only from high-welfare farms & abattoirs. Retail packaging is either 100% recyclable, biodegradable or compostable. Jack’s customers benefit from the personal touch, with doorstep delivery every Friday. He also has a regular stall at Cirencester & Nailsworth Farmers’ Markets, where he’s always happy to advise on the best recipes for cooking.

Countryside Alliance Awards Director Sarah Lee commented: “We have been overwhelmed by nominations this year. The secret to the Rural Oscars’ popularity is that they honour the people involved in these businesses and not just their produce or services. They exist to sing the praises of those who work hard to keep our communities and rural economy ticking, but don’t seek the spotlight. These awards provide a cause for celebration in a time of great uncertainty in the countryside. Our local produce is second to none and there are many community heroes and businesses worthy of national recognition.”

Jack Wallace from Artisan Jack commented: “This news came out of the blue for me, and I’m incredibly proud to have been nominated for this award by my customers. It’s been a hard slog to get here, especially as Covid hit not long after setting up my business, but I’m still as passionate as ever about supplying my customers with a great selection of high-quality meat products. I’d like to thank all of them for their support, from the local pubs I supply, my weekly newsletter customers and all those who find me at the local farmers’ markets. It means such a lot to a small business like mine, thank you’.

Winners will be chosen via a public vote opening 19th February and announced in the spring. The winners of each region will be up against fellow winners from around the UK and the national champion will be announced at the House of Lords in the national champions reception in June.
