Ready, Set, Run Cheltenham
Ade Prewer, 48, from Cheltenham will be amongst the runners who will be lacing up his trainers to raise money for the palliative and bereavement support charity, which runs Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham.
Taking on the half marathon distance, Run Cheltenham 2025 will mark Ade’s first ever running race and his training is already well underway, as he shared: “I’m not in any way shape or form a runner, but my sister-in-law Laura is running with me which is helpful.
“At the start I couldn’t run 100m without stopping and recently I went out and did 4 miles. I am really pleased with myself and it’s doing my health some good at the same time which is a bonus.”
Ade’s sister-in-law Laura Marriott added: “I am so pleased that Ade and I are able to take on this running challenge together, having someone to train with is so encouraging! We are both very proud to be raising money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice and we are so grateful to anyone who can support us and make a donation to such a worthy cause.”
Taking place on 21 September this popular community event boasts a route that takes in broad tree-lined avenues and diverse terrain, combining regency splendour with plenty of Cotswolds charm. With three distances to choose from (half marathon, 10km and a community mile) this flat course with full road closures is perfect for novices and seasoned runner alike.
Although a first-time runner, Ade is no stranger to the excitement of a Run Cheltenham race day, as he explained: “I’ve been volunteering for Sue Ryder at Run Cheltenham, for a few years now, helping to set up and run the water station in the town centre. Last year I was watching people go past and I thought – I’m going to do this!”
Ade has been involved in many Sue Ryder events as a volunteer since 2017, initially through his workplace, In2Print. Since then, Ade, along with many of his colleagues has volunteered for other popular Sue Ryder events such as Ride for Ryder and Starlight Hike. Ade concluded: “I thought it was time to turn volunteering into raising as much money as I possibly can!”
Even before becoming a volunteer Ade was aware of the vital role Sue Ryder played in his local community, as he shared: “In my late teens my friend’s father was diagnosed with cancer, and he was fortunate enough to be cared for by Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Even though it was such a sad time I thought the hospice was wonderful. Martin passed away with his family around him and you could see how much it meant to him. Everyone at Sue Ryder was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble.”
Reflecting on how he will be feeling on race day Ade said: “It’s going to be nerve wracking, but I’ve now got the bit between my teeth! The race day is my 49th birthday so that makes it even more special.”
Matt Reay, Community Fundraising Manager for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: “We are delighted to be the headline charity partner for Run Cheltenham again this year. It is always a fantastic day, and it is amazing to see so many runners from across the county, and beyond, put their best foot forward for Sue Ryder. We are so grateful to Ade and Laura who have set themselves an incredible target of raising £5,000 for the charity. The vital funds that our supporters raise ensure that we can provide care to people when they need it most.”
