REVIEW: The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie at the Everyman Theatre
Cheltenham
On its 70th anniversary tour, The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie made its home at The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham.
Taking our seats in row F, where we had not sat before, we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves quite close to the stage. As the red curtain lifted it revealed the set of Monkswell Manor, a remote guesthouse where a group of strangers, trapped by a snowstorm, come together to play out a classic tale of murder. A tale that has been entertaining audiences since 1952 when it opened in London's West End.
With a murderer on the loose, the plot thickens and tensions rise. The story takes turns this way and that, keeping the audience engaged in a game of guesswork. It was hard to deduce who committed the crime of murder! By the end of the story, all is revealed and the audience is asked to keep the secret of who the murderer is.
I found this theatre production both captivating and well-executed by a talented cast. Each actor played their part superbly by bringing their character to life and creating an element of intrigue in their own individual way. The characterisation is very human in that each person has a particular manner and their own foibles, such as the newly married hosts who are new to running a guesthouse, the eccentric architect who runs about the stage, and the stern young lady from Mallorca, to name a few.
The Mousetrap is a must-see production for anyone who adores a mystery! If you have the opportunity to see The Mousetrap, do not miss it, and be sure to collect a programme as it gives a special insight into Agatha Christie's life as she carved her way into the world of writing.
The Mousetrap is showing at the Everyman Theatre until Saturday 20th May.
