REVIEW: The Rocky Horror Show

Cheltenham

Venue: The Everyman Theatre

Ripped straight from the frames of a 50s sci-fi flick, The Rocky Horror Show has been a cult classic and crowd-pleaser since its West End debut and film adaptation, both led by the legendary Tim Curry as Dr Frank-N-Furter, in the 1970s.

Glam, fun, sexy, and exceedingly camp, The Rocky Horror Show follows straight-laced lovebirds Brad and Janet, thrust (literally) into a castle full of eccentric servants and the iconic Frank himself. Larger-than-life characters belt out show-stopping songs, including the beloved Time Warp and Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me.

The characters are surrounded by mind-bogglingly inventive staging, such as a giant film reel wrapped around the stage and Earth-shattering sound effects. The music thumps through the ground, quaking the seats as if the Everyman itself is about to take flight! The lights often drown the stage in colour, flooding the Everyman to immerse the audience further in this strange, thrilling tale.

Audience participation is encouraged and welcomed; hardcore fans who know the script by heart often participate in the show, shouting out pre-scripted responses to the characters’ dialogue. The brilliant Narrator engages in playful banter with the audience, inserting modern references into the timeless script and bringing a wealth of charm and charisma to the role.

As this was our first Rocky Horror theatre experience, we were overwhelmed but pleasantly surprised by the extent of audience participation. So many members of our audience were dressed in costumes, some waving their arms high in the air, and many immediately leapt to their feet to sing and dance along to some of the biggest songs. Be prepared to get to your feet and Time Warp the night away!

Please note that this performance contains strobe lighting, smoke machines, and loud sound effects.

Dress up in your sparkliest outfit, strap on your highest heels (gentlemen included), and don’t miss The Rocky Horror Show, beaming down on the Everyman Theatre until Saturday 22nd February. Don’t be left in antici…… pation – get your tickets now!
