The Gin Academy at Revolution, Cheltenham
Cheltenham
With gin not being my first choice of tipple, it was with a little trepidation I attended a 90 minute gin tasting course at Revolution, Cheltenham named the ‘The Gin Academy’.
However, the warm welcome we received from Roy and the team soon put us at ease and we began the evening with a toast of Geneva Dutch.
Our next port was Plymouth to sample a refreshing Plymouth gin and Fevertree tonic. It is the oldest gin distillery in England, and has been making its gin according to the original family recipe since 1793.
Roy’s extensive knowledge took us through the history of gin making and consumption in past centuries. He used images and anecdotes to add to the charm of the evening.
Next, we were invited behind the bar to create much loved classic gin cocktails including the Bramble, Negroni and Tom Collins. Each drink scoring highly on both presentation and taste.
We ended with a group competition. Armed with our new found knowledge and tweaked taste buds, we were set a challenge to create and name our own oriGINal (it had to be done!) Gin based cocktail.
I set to work with Limoncello, Prosecco and rhubarb gin in hand, plus other top secret ingredients!
Finished off with a sprig of mint and a bird for decoration, my aptly named ‘Rhubird’ managed a half decent fourth place.
With a not unsubstantial amount of alcohol warming our insides , we meandered off to find a taxi home. All in all a wonderful course, well worth attending with a group or on your own, whether you’re a gin fanatic or not.
