REVIEW: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jack and the Beanstalk at Cheltenham Playhouse
"I haven't laughed so much in a very long time!"
"I haven't laughed so much in a very long time!" said one of the adult panto goers on the way out of this year's Cheltenham Playhouse panto, Jack and the Beanstalk.
Alas, the 6 year old boy Reuben, who sat behind us and chuckled a lot through out was less generic! When asked what his favourite part was, he said " The farting cow!"
In a way, this sums up the true wonder of a good pantomime. It is entertaining for adults and children on different levels.
Yes, there were some adult jokes, but there was also plenty of slapstic and witticism for the children.
And it seems there was some flexibility with the script, as at one point the aforementiond cow, played by West End star and director Kieran Mortell, got caught out by one of his quick-witted actors and had a good giggle himself.
The pantomine is set in the mountain town of Chilltenham, where the giant had a modern and environmental twist.
The actors were well cast and convincing in their roles, whilst the youngsters from Theatre Studio added lots of fun and enthusiasm to the proceedings.
The use of the digital screen as the back drop made for some fun passages, that wouldn't have been possible without it. (You'll know what we mean when you see it!)
This modern version of Jack and the Beanstalk was written by professional scriptwriter, Alex Jackson, who has been writing and licensing pantomimes for ten years. He wrote the script especially for Cheltenham Playhouse, but has 80 other pantomimes being performed around the world this Christmas.
When we spoke to Alex on opening night, it was the first time he had seen the finished panto. He said "It has been such a pleasure to see everyone’s hard work. The cast and crew have done a great job with the play that I based in Cheltenham for a local performance. I wrote the panto in the summer and this is the first time I have seen it performed. As it got closer the performance, the cast have added their own relevant jokes."
Kieron Milsom, one of the producers said "We have tried to make this Gloucestershire’s community panto with fun for the whole family, for all ages. We have sold the second highest number of tickets ever for the Playhouse and tickets are still flying out as the word spreads. Some people are already booking to come and see it again!"
There is no doubt that Jack and The Beanstalk has succeeded in being a firm favourite with pantogoers this Christmas. If you haven't already got your tickets, head to the website to buy them now.
