Dance heads to the Wild

Near Stroud

Venue: Hailey's Wood

Our first is this autumn, November 30, 2024, 12:00 - 16:00. Come land and unravel with us and feel the empowerment of women’s circles with dances in the wild

In these times of cuts, and while the world feels so unsteady, sometimes frightening, professional contemporary dancer Hayley J S Matthews isn't phased. Instead, she has leapt from the stage to the woods, to hold other's in what she calls these 'liminal times'.

Hayley believes that dancing allows us to move through things we can't move through alone, and that it does this for dancers and audiences alike. "There's a reason" she says, " that in Greek times, when things became almost 'too much' for the soloist in a performance, the chorus arrived. Then, everyone, dancer, chorus and audience, moved through emotion they couldn't have moved through alone. It's the alchemy, the contagion of dancing".

Matthews believes also that dance hasn't been playing this role so well, because what she describes as dance's 'feminine' aspects haven't had so much space to blossom in recent times. So she takes to the woods to give space to these feminine aspects and to dance's deep role. By connecting her dancing back to the land, the seasons, the wild, and her own body, and back to the people.

Her work is beginning to move through the UK this year, in the wild. "It's like" she says "the dances are catching fire". Hayley is brining the first dance of her seasonal series to Gloucestershire on November 30, in a women only event in the woods near Stroud. In collaboration with Women's Circle Facilitator Emma Johnson. The dance is called 'Lakes of Anima'. A dance she says "that brings us to our stucknesses, and slips us through the woodland wilds to a post-activist, feminist, freedom. "
